Breaking! Teamsters Go Green: Leave Pro-Drilling Group and Now Oppose ANWR Drilling

This is big.

Great news for all of us who seek a Blue/Green Alliance!  The Teamsters today left the ANWR coalition, a group in favor of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.  Jim Hoffa has just announced that the Teamsters are pulling out of the coalition supporting drilling in ANWR and are shifting their support to efforts to build coalitions with green groups to create a sustainable energy economy around sources like solar, wind and geothermal.

"We are not going to drill our way out of the energy problems we are facing--not here and not in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge," Hoffa told labor and environmental activists at an Oakland, Calif., summit on good jobs and clean air. "We must find a long-term approach that breaks our dependence on foreign oil by investing in the development of alternate energy sources like solar, wind and geothermal power."

More, after the fold.

(also on dkos)

Jim Hoffa announced the union's withdrawal from the ANWR coalition, citing the need to build a green economy that fosters the development of alternative energy sources and creates good union jobs--instead of lining the pockets of big oil tycoons.

"Our economy is in shambles. Gas is climbing to $5 a gallon. The dollar has collapsed. Inflation is on the rise. Americans are seeing their paychecks shrink. Their family health care is being slashed," Hoffa said. "Finding a long-term solution has a tremendous upside. It will be environmentally friendly and will serve as a much-needed boost to our sagging economy."

Hoffa also thanked labor's partners in the environmental movement, who are currently working to reduce emissions from port trucks. He urged the strengthening of the alliance, known as the Coalition for Clean & Safe Ports, to achieve a common goal: Good jobs and clean air.

"If we are to prosper as a nation, our future lies in a green economy," he said. "But it's up to us to help define the rules of that new green economy. A green economy means we must reduce our dependence on foreign oil. And it means creating good union jobs in America's growing industries."

Hoffa Rejects 'Drilling Our Way Out' of Energy Crisis, Demands Long-Term Policy Solutions

This is the core of the Blue/Greeen alliance that will rebuild and remake a just America:

"A green economy means we must reduce our dependence on foreign oil. And it means creating good union jobs in America's growing industries."

Both.

The Sierra Club praised the Teamsters for this move.

"The Sierra Club and the environmental movement applaud your announcement and look forward to building a powerful movement together--a movement that helps workers, protects the environment, prevents global warming and rebuilds our economy with good, green jobs," said Greg Haegele, The Sierra Club's Director of Conservation. "We are proud to stand here today, as allies and friends of the Teamsters."

Hoffa Rejects 'Drilling Our Way Out' of Energy Crisis, Demands Long-Term Policy Solutions

Hoffa and the Teamsters are joining with Al Gore and Barack Obama in working to build a Green economy and all realize that we cannot drill our way out of this mess.  We need alternative energy.

Barack Obama last week:

"For decades, Al Gore has challenged the skeptics in Washington on climate change and awakened the conscience of a nation to the urgency of this threat. I strongly agree with Vice President Gore that we cannot drill our way to energy independence, but must fast-track investments in renewable sources of energy like solar power, wind power and advanced biofuels, and those are the investments I will make as President.  It's a strategy that will create millions of new jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced, and one that will leave our children a world that is cleaner and safer."

Gore:  "end our reliance on carbon-based fuels"

Al Gore laast week:

We're borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that's got to change.

But if we grab hold of that common thread and pull it hard, all of these complex problems begin to unravel and we will find that we're holding the answer to all of them right in our hand.

The answer is to end our reliance on carbon-based fuels.

In my search for genuinely effective answers to the climate crisis, I have held a series of "solutions summits" with engineers, scientists, and CEOs. In those discussions, one thing has become abundantly clear: when you connect the dots, it turns out that the real solutions to the climate crisis are the very same measures needed to renew our economy and escape the trap of ever-rising energy prices. Moreover, they are also the very same solutions we need to guarantee our national security without having to go to war in the Persian Gulf.

What if we could use fuels that are not expensive, don't cause pollution and are abundantly available right here at home?

Gore:  "end our reliance on carbon-based fuels"

Jim Hoffa today:

"We are not going to drill our way out of the energy problems we are facing--not here and not in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge," Hoffa told labor and environmental activists at an Oakland, Calif., summit on good jobs and clean air. "We must find a long-term approach that breaks our dependence on foreign oil by investing in the development of alternate energy sources like solar, wind and geothermal power."

Working together with labor, environmentalists and Democratic candidates, wer can change Ameirca and solve our energy crisis, rebuild a greeen economy with good union jobs, and address global warming.

We need to work with the Teamsters and other unions to rebuild a Green America.  Thank you Mr. Hoffa and all Teamsters! Solidarity!

Go Teamsters!!

Horray! (2.00 / 2)

Thanks for sharing the great news, Tom!

I'm what some would call an "enviro-nut" or "environazi", so most probably wouldn't expect this... But the more I talk with my union friends, the more we all agree on creating new American jobs that also happen to be "green-collar jobs" that work to end our carbon addiction. I've known that the "blue-green coalition" is real for a while now. But with this news from the Teamsters, I think it's about to grow exponentially! :-)

Thanks. Yes, (2.00 / 1)

this is really a big one.  It makes it so much easier for both groups to come together.  Environmentalists support EFCA and unions support green projects.

I think you're right: a beginning of exponential growth.

Re: Breaking! Teamsters Go Green: Leave (2.00 / 4)

We need an electric grid that gets its energy source from wind and solar hydroelectric.  Our electric grids are old and need replacinag.  Why not just build a new grid that supports these alternative energies just like Gore wants to do.  Individual home owners could have solar panels on their roofs, and they could have windmills, and plug into the new electric grid to power their own electricity.  The demand for oil would go way down.  The teamsters care about their children's future and the future of our world.  Go Teamsters!

Solar and hydroelectric.  Also replacing not replacinag.

Re: Breaking! Teamsters Go Green (2.00 / 4)

This must not be amusing to those who orchestrated the smear campaign against Gore's challenge.

Re: Breaking! Teamsters Go Green: Leave Pro-Drilli (2.00 / 4)

This is great news. Now if only the Teamsters can get their members to buy into the same attitude. It won't be easy.

Actually... (2.00 / 3)

You'd be surprised to learn how many union folks like Teamsters already agree with us. Perhaps it's a little different here in California, but I doubt it's dramatically different from the rest of the country. Basically the more people are educated about the climate crisis and our real energy problems, the more they come around to "going green". I'm sure with more education, we'll keep seeing more folks come around.

Re: Actually... (2.00 / 1)

That may be true, but teamsters are more affected by the price of oil than any other group in the country. The price of diesel is over $4.60 in my area. That makes them susceptible to the 'drill now' argument. I'm not saying that a lot of them can't see past the falsehoods of that solution, however a lot of them are desperate for some kind of relief from high fuel prices.

Re: Actually... (2.00 / 1)

Ah, but the conservative's hope for the diesel crowd is only sustainable if the drillers can convince everyone that the price is high now and will be significantly lower later. It's entirely possible that they've been so "ooga-booga!" about oil prices that they've lost the second half of the conditional.

If the diesel crowd realizes prices are high now and are going to stay high, they have the greatest incentive to find alternatives since, as you say, they're more affected than any other group in the country.

Re: Actually... (none / 0)

One good thing about diesels is that they can be converted to run other fuels quite easily.

Re: Breaking! Teamsters Go Green: (2.00 / 1)

The high cost of fuel has gotten truckers to start thinking about fuel efficiency. Here's an article from the LA Times you'll probably enjoy:

Chrome, schrome. Truckers are all about mileage now.

Re: Breaking! Teamsters Go Green: (2.00 / 1)

I did enjoy that article. Especially the part at the end about the fully electric truck the LA Port Authority has just put in use.

My son and daughter-in-law work for a truck dealer. They sell everything from small cube-trucks to semis.

Re: Breaking! Teamsters Go Green: (2.00 / 2)

The amount of money they're spending on fuel really puts things in perspective. Just think how much more we're all paying for everything those truckers deliver (which is basically everything we purchase).

It is funny to hear what they consider "good" mileage. But then again, going from 4.5 mpg to 6.5 mpg is a 44% increase in mpg. If everyone could increase their mpg by 44%, we'd be in much better financial and environmental shape.

K & R--

It's interesting how some progressives get it that it all fits together.  John Edwards was one of the early ones who did.  I suspect he continues communications with unions on these issues.

This is good ECONOMIC policy for the union (2.00 / 2)

The future including JOBS is in new technolgies, the meme that we can drill our way out of this just allows those making a killing in old technolgies to glut the thinking of the populace and delay the inevitable.

I like this as an economic decision let along the evironmental impact.

The Teamsters MUST KNOW that as soon as we can start moving investment into changing our energy to a 21st century based technology, the jobs will follow.

Rec'ed btw.
